Backpack Blessings

This school year, Sabine ISD has partnered with a local community church to start a New Program called “Backpack Blessings”, which is dedicated to improving the lives of hungry children at times when other resources are not available. The program provides a backpack full of nutritious kid-friendly, shelf-stable foods to students over the weekend. Bags are packed each week and are discreetly distributed by school staff to participating children every Friday afternoon.

Why Do We Do It?
There are more than 16.2 -million children in this country who are at risk of hunger. The consequences of hunger are much more than a growling stomach. Poor nutrition can result in a weaker immune system, lower IQ, shorter attention spans, and lower academic achievement. Children are fed during the school week by federal government programs, but we want to make sure they’re getting nutritional meals over the weekend, too.

How is a child selected for the program?

Campus administrators, faculty and staff members identify students that have a need to be in the program. Once a student is selected, the parent/guardian is contacted and informed their child has been referred to the Backpack Blessing Program. Parent permission is required for student to participate in program.
